Stickley Construction Features: What Makes Them So Iconic?

Mar 21st 2020

The five Stickley brothers are renowned for the creation of Mission style furniture, creating a name for themselves internationally in the early 20th century with their unique Mission Oak designs. Stickley furniture pushed back against the idea that furniture ought to be made with shoddy workmanship. Instead, they created pieces that were made to last.

Honesty and integrity are built into each and every Stickley product with tried and tested traditional joinery making them long-lasting and strong without losing any of their beauty.

Here are just a few iconic construction features Stickley uses when crafting their furniture:

  • Pinned mortise and tenon joinery. Stickley door joints are often tenoned, glued, and pinned with wooden pins. The pins supply additional strength by locking the joint so even without the use of glue the joint will hold together.

  • Splining. The strongest possible corner is created by splining the mitered corners of many mirrors. There's a minimal chance of a joint ever breaking.

  • Dovetailed cross rails. On Mission furniture, the cross rails on cases are dovetailed into the ends and are hidden from view. Dovetailed cross rails strengthen the case from side to side and the joint is self-locking with or without glue. Compared to dowel joints, which rely on glue and might fail over time, a dovetail joint can't fail and separation of the end panels is impossible unless the wood is split apart.

  • Quadalinear posts. Four quartersawn boards are mitered together around a solid core to enable the beauty of ray flake to be visible on all four sides of the post.

How are Stickley rugs crafted?

Stickley furniture sets aren't the only hand-crafted products the Stickley brothers created. A rug's edges ought to be ideally 12 to 14 inches from the room's perimeter, so it's important that it matches the tone and aesthetic of your home.

Stickley rugs are hand-knotted by master weavers with rich colors and muted tones that bring in pops of color without overwhelming the space.
